Freeze Warning For North Alabama

| April 4, 2018 @ 3:21 pm

WINDY, COOL DAY: As expected, this has been a sunny, windy, and cool day across the great state of Alabama… many North Alabama communities are only in the 50s, about 15 degrees below average for early April. A northwest wind of 12-22 mph is making it feel cooler. The wind will die down tonight once the sun goes down.

FREEZE WARNING: Most of North Alabama is under a freeze warning for tomorrow morning. Understand there will be colder pockets over South Alabama with a light freeze, or some frost as well.

Colder spots will drop into the 20s by daybreak tomorrow with a clear sky. Then, during the day, we warm into the upper 60s with sunshine in full supply.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The day Friday will remain dry with a high in the low 70s, but clouds will begin to increase by afternoon. We will bring in a good chance of rain, and possibly a thunderstorm, late Friday night into Saturday morning. For now it looks like the main window for rain over the northern half of Alabama will come from about 10:00 p.m. Friday until 10:00 a.m. Saturday. The risk of severe storms looks low at this point, and rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely.

While the rain should be over by late morning Saturday, the day will be cloudy, breezy, and sharply colder with temperatures in the 50s most of the day… some communities could drop into the 40s by afternoon. Then, the sky becomes clear Saturday night, and another late season freeze is likely by daybreak Sunday with lows in the 28-32 degree range. The day Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn’s annual “A Day” spring football game kicks off at 3:00 Saturday afternoon at Jordan Hare Stadium. A good chance the rain will be over by kickoff, but it will be cloudy, breezy, and very cool with temperatures only in the 50s during the game.

NEXT WEEK: Rain and possibly a few thunderstorms are likely Monday with another cold front, then we will see more very cool air through the mid-week period. Looks like potential for frost, and maybe a freeze for some, early Wednesday (April 11). A decent chance this will be the last freeze of the season for most places… and this is why we always recommend waiting until April 15 every year to plant anything that would be harmed by a frost or freeze.
