The Final Saturday of September
It is a warm and mainly dry afternoon across the state. In North/Central Alabama we are seeing plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures for this final Saturday of September; many locations are in the lower and mid 80s, which remain above average for this time of year.
Scanning the radar we are dry in our part of the state, but there are some showers and some storms across the southern third of the state.
For tonight, expect a partly to mostly cloudy sky with some patchy fog. Lows will range from the low 60s northwest to near 70 southeast.
FOR OUR SUNDAY: Moisture levels will creep up a bit and we will mention the chance for a few scattered showers over South and East Alabama, but nothing to widespread. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.
WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 112.8F at Mitribah, Kuwait. The lowest observation was -95.6F at Concordia, Antarctica.
CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: The highest observation was 110F at Death Valley, CA. The lowest observation was 21F at Fosston, MN.
WEATHER ON THIS DATE IN 1927: An outbreak of tornadoes from Oklahoma to Indiana caused 81 deaths and 25 million dollars damage. A tornado (possibly two tornadoes) cut an eight-mile long path across Saint Louis MO, to Granite City IL, killing 79 persons. The damage path at times was a mile and a quarter in width. The storm followed a similar path to tornadoes which struck in 1871, 1896, and 1959.
