Much Better At Midday As Fog Has Dissipated

| December 11, 2018 @ 11:58 am

At 11:30 AM: The good news is the freezing fog that was occurring across the area has now dissipated and much of Central Alabama is being bathed in sunshine. Temperatures are now above freezing across the area as they are ranging from the mid-30s to the upper 40s. The one spot in the area that is cool and not cold is Eufaula at 51 degrees. Believe it or not, the Birmingham Airport is the cold spot in the area at 36 degrees.

The traffic map for the Birmingham Metropolitan Area looks a lot better than what we were seeing earlier this morning, but I-459 still looks to be the problem zone, especially from the I-65 junction in Hoover to the I-20 junction in Irondale. Hopefully, everything will clear up soon and return to a normal traffic flow.

WEATHER FOR THE REST OF YOUR TUESDAY: Central Alabama will have a good chance to thaw out throughout the rest of the morning and into the afternoon and early evening hours, as skies will be crystal clear with plenty of sunshine. With very low dewpoints and maximum sunshine, this should evaporate nearly all of the moisture that remains on the roadways. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 40s to the lower 50s across the area from north to south. For tonight and through the overnight hours, skies will start off clear but a few clouds will start to move in across the northern portions of the area. Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s. Dewpoints should be a few degrees cooler than the low temperatures so fog should not be an issue tonight.

WARMER WITH A FEW CLOUDS ON WEDNESDAY: While there will be some clouds that may block out the sun for a few minutes at a time, temperatures will be a few degrees warmer than what we are experiencing today. Skies will be partly cloudy but we’ll continue to stay dry, and afternoon highs will be up in the mid to upper 50s. Overnight lows will not be much lower than the daytime highs due to the cloud cover. Skies will be mostly cloudy and lows will be in the lower to mid-40s.

At Sacramento CA, the mercury dipped to 17 degrees to establish an all-time record low for that location. Morning lows were below freezing from the 9th to the 15th at Sacramento, and the high on the 11th was just 34 degrees. The cold wave dealt severe damage to truck crops and orange groves in the Sacramento Valley.
