Thunderstorms Moving Into Central Parts Of The Area At Midday

| April 25, 2019 @ 11:49 am

At 11:40 am, a line of thunderstorms stretches from Double Springs to Jasper to Brookwood, then curving back around to Greensboro and Demopolis. Nothing severe with the line, but there is plenty of heavier downpours and cloud-to-ground lightning occurring. There are some gusty winds possible with this line, but only in the 20-30 MPH range at the moment. East of the line of storms, conditions are mainly dry with only a few light showers occurring over the extreme southeastern parts of the area.

The good news is that the cloud cover is really keeping surface-based instability in check as temperatures have not been able to rise as quickly as usual. Temperatures are in the mid-60s to the mid-70s where rain is not occurring, and in the lower to mid-60s in the rain-cooled air.

SPC continues a Marginal Risk for severe storms for locations south of a line from roughly Tuscaloosa to Tuskegee, with the southern parts of Marengo County included with much of South Alabama in a Slight Risk. Damaging winds up to 60 MPH will be possible over those risk areas. The risk of a brief tornado is not zero but is very, very low at this point.

Timing for stronger to severe storms in the risk areas will be from roughly now until around 8:00 pm tonight from west to east. North of the risk areas, a strong storm or two may be possible but the threat of any organized severe storms remain very, very low.

We’ll continue to have updates throughout the day.
