SPC Mesoscale Discussion: Severe Thunderstorm Watch 156…

| May 9, 2019 @ 11:22 am

SUMMARY…Severe weather risk continues across WW 156, and will gradually expand eastward/southeastward with time. This expansion in risk area will likely require a new/downstream WW.

DISCUSSION…Latest radar loop shows a broken band of storms extending from northern Alabama southwestward into southwestern Louisiana, moving quickly eastward across WW 156 and surrounding areas. Storms have exhibited transient rotation at times, with damaging wind gusts also reported in a few areas. As the pre-storm environment continues to heat/destabilize, storms will likely persist, spreading east/southeast of the existing watch with time. Though hints that both the deep-layer and low-level wind field may weaken some through the day are apparent in morning model runs, potential for locally damaging winds and marginal hail — and possibly a brief tornado or two — will continue, which will likely require new WW issuance.
