A Brief Check On Our Weather At 2:30 PM

Showers and a few thunderstorms continue to push into and across the western portions of Central Alabama as of 2:17 pm. While much of the rainfall is light at this juncture, there are a few heavier pockets of rain out there, especially with the embedded pocket stretching from Double Springs down to Fayette to just west of Coker. We have a few heavier showers out there ahead of the main line with some moderate to heavy rainfall, but no severe storms at this time.

NWS Birmingham has just recently updated its severe outlook for the rest of the day and removed the northwest corner of the area from the Marginal Risk. They have added a Slight Risk to locations along and south of I-85 as instability values along with shear will be highest over those locations. The rest of Central Alabama is in a Marginal Risk. Damaging winds up to 60 MPH and a few tornadoes are possible in the Slight Risk locations. Isolated damaging winds and a brief tornado or two are possible in the Marginal Risk locations, but highly unlikely.

Timing remains the same with the main window for strong to severe thunderstorms continue to be from now through midnight tonight. West of a line from Hanceville to Brookwood to Demopolis will be from now to 4:00 pm. East of that to a line stretching from Fruithurst to Alexander City to Fort Deposit will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. East of that will be from 7:00 pm to 12:00 am.

Even though the severe weather threat has dropped somewhat for much of Central Alabama, please stay weather aware and ready to act just in case your location goes under a warning… especially over the southeastern parts of the area. We’ll keep you posted.
