Areal Flood Advisory For Bibb & Shelby Counties Until 11:30 AM

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for…
Shelby County in central Alabama…
Bibb County in central Alabama…

* Until 1130 AM CDT.

* At 836 AM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated
heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This will cause urban and small
stream flooding in the advisory area. Up to two inches of rain have
already fallen.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include…
Hoover, Alabaster, Pelham, Helena, Calera, Chelsea, Montevallo,
Brent, Columbiana, Centreville, Indian Springs Village, West
Blocton, Wilton, American Village, Oak Mountain State Park,
Maylene, Brierfield Ironworks Park, Mertz, University Of Montevallo
and Talladega National Forest.

Additional rainfall of up to two inches is expected over the area.
This additional rain will result in minor flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate route.
