RIGHT NOW: Some light rain is falling this morning over parts of North and East Alabama, and those showers will move slowly southward during the next few hours. Drier air will invade the northwest corner of the state shortly, and we figure the sky will become partly sunny by midday as it drops to the south. The surface front will be stalling out just south of Birmingham, and showers and storms are possible this afternoon mainly south of I-20. Most communities today will see a high in the upper 80s.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: It still looks like the deepest moisture will be along and south of a line from Anniston to Selma to Mobile; places like Tuscaloosa, Fayette, and Huntsville should be dry with just an outside risk of a shower for Birmingham. Highs should be close to 90 degrees.

OUR WEEKEND: The front dissipates, and moist air will cover all of the state, so we will have to dodge scattered showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday with afternoon highs not far from 90 degrees. The best chance of a shower or storm will come during the peak of the daytime heating process.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like very typical summer weather for the first half of next week, with partly sunny days and some risk of scattered showers and storms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs should be in the 89 to 92 degree range. The weather toward the end of next week could be influenced by a tropical system… the one now known as TD2, soon to be Tropical Storm Ana…

WHAT ABOUT TD2: I encourage you to watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics associated with this system in the East Atlantic. Convection did increase during the night, and it looks like it could be upgraded to a tropical storm later today. Models are in very good agreement, and the NHC track has it north of the Leeward Islands this weekend, in a position to avoid recurvature and possibly threaten Florida and the east coast of the U.S. late next week.

The GFS takes Ana over Cuba, and then turns it northward right up through the Florida peninsula, then north-northeast up the Atlantic coast. If this solution is correct, then Alabama and the Gulf Coast will remain on the dry side with very little impact here. But, needless to say, this is all voodoo so far in advance and things could change, so keep an eye on our updates. But, everyone in Florida and along the Atlantic coast will need to keep up with the progress of this season opening storm.
