Mostly Dry Weather Continues Through Saturday

| September 3, 2020 @ 3:01 pm

DRY DAYS: A dry airmass covers Alabama this afternoon, and the entire state is shower-free at mid-afternoon. Temperatures are mostly in the 88-92 degree range, and tonight will be mostly clear with a low in the low 70s.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND: We don’t expect much change tomorrow through Sunday as the relatively dry pattern continues. Any afternoon showers tomorrow should be very isolated, and mainly near the Tennessee state line. Saturday looks like a dry, sunny day statewide, and then on Sunday a few scattered showers could show up over the southern counties. The high tomorrow will be close to 90, and then in the upper 80s Saturday and Sunday.

Moisture will begin to rise on Labor Day, and we will mention a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, but still nothing widespread. Monday’s high will be in the 85-88 degree range for most communities.

NEXT WEEK: Coverage of showers and thunderstorms will increase during the mid-week period, and we have a pretty decent chance of seeing noticeably cooler air toward the end of the week following a cold front. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: Omar is dissipating over the open Atlantic, well east of the U.S… and Nana is dissipating inland over Central America. So, the attention is shifting to the far eastern Atlantic where NHC is monitoring three areas. Two of them have a medium to high chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm over the next five days, but it is simply way too early to know if they will reach the U.S. Just something to watch for now.

The Gulf of Mexico remains quiet, and the weather will be routine on the Central Gulf Coast (Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach) for the Labor Day weekend with a good supply of sunshine daily along with a few scattered storms.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB kicks off their season tonight at Legion Field against Central Arkansas (7:00p CT kickoff)… the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from near 84 degrees at kickoff, into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

LOOKING BACK AT AUGUST: The average high for Birmingham was 89.8 degrees… slightly below the “normal” value of 90.6 degrees. The hottest day was on August 12 when the high was 96. Rain for the month was 5.89?, well above the average value of 3.93?.

ON THIS DATE IN 1970: During the early evening hours, amid a severe hailstorm at Coffeyville, Kansas, a hailstone 17.5 inches in circumference and nearly two pounds in weight was recovered. Average stone size from the storm was five inches in diameter, with another stone reportedly eight inches in diameter.

ON THIE DATE IN 1979: Hurricane David made landfall in south Florida as a Category 2 storm. It caused 15 deaths in the US. Hurricane David was a Category 5 over the Dominican Republic were over 2,000 people died. It would be followed a week later by Hurricane Frederic, which made landfall on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
