Periods Of Rain Today; Colder Air Moves In This Afternoon/Tonight
WET AT TIMES TODAY: Clouds will cover Alabama today, and periods of rain will continue with the approach a cold front. There could be a rumble of thunder somewhere, but no severe storms are expected, and additional rain amounts today will be generally 1/2 inch or less. Temperatures will begin to fall this afternoon over the northern third of the state as colder air pushes in behind the front.
The sky begins to clear late tonight, after midnight, and tomorrow will be a brighter day with a mostly sunny sky. We start the day tomorrow around 30, followed by a high between 45 and 50 degrees. We drop into the mid 20s early Friday morning… then expect sunshine in full force during the day Friday with a high in the mid 50s, right at seasonal averages for late January in Alabama.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: After some morning sunshine, the sky becomes cloudy Saturday afternoon ahead of the next weather system to the west; temperatures will reach the low to mid 60s. Then, rain is likely Saturday night into Sunday morning… amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely. Some thunder is possible, but for now models show no surface based instability, and no risk of severe storms. Clouds linger much of the day Sunday with a high around 60 degrees.
NEXT WEEK: Much of the week looks dry with seasonal temperatures (highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s)… rain and possibly a few thunderstorms return late in the week on Friday with the approach of a cold front. ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Bitter cold air gripped most of Alaska during January 1989. Tanana, near Fairbanks, saw a low temperature of 76 degrees below zero on this day. The high for the day was 60 degrees below zero. With an average temperature of 68 degrees below zero, Tanana saw an average temperature of nearly sixty degrees below normal.
