Rain Returns To North Alabama Late Tonight/Tomorrow

| February 25, 2021 @ 3:04 pm

ANOTHER PREVIEW OF SPRING: Temperatures have soared into the 70s across Alabama again this afternoon with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Clouds will return tonight ahead of a cold front, with some rain moving into the northern half of the state after midnight.

Rain over North/Central Alabama tomorrow morning will end by midday, but showers and storms will persist into the afternoon over the northern third of the state, generally north of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). A few strong storms are possible; SPC maintains a low end “marginal risk” of severe storms for areas north of a line from Tuscaloosa to Pelham to Piedmont.

Heavier storms in the marginal risk area could produce small hail and gusty winds; we are not expecting a tornado threat. Most of South Alabama will be dry tomorrow; highs range from the upper 50s over the Tennessee Valley to the low 70s over the southern counties of the state.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The surface front will stall out near the Tennessee state line; we are expecting it to be the warmest weekend so far this year with highs between 75 and 80 degrees. The sky will be generally cloudy Saturday and Sunday with a few scattered showers possible, but a decent part of the weekend will be dry. The most widespread rain will be over the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama, but even there it certainly won’t rain all weekend.

NEXT WEEK: Rain and a few thunderstorms are likely Monday and Tuesday… the European global continues to suggest some potential for strong thunderstorms Tuesday. Then, the latter half of the week will trend back toward drier conditions. Highs through the week will be mostly in the 60s… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1934: An outbreak of six tornadoes killed nineteen in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. Nineteen people were killed in at least six significant tornadoes. The hardest hit communities were Bowden, Georgia and Shady Grove, Alabama, in Pike County. One person died in a tornado near Calera. One home in Lauderdale County Mississipi was picked up, thrown four hundred feet and blown to bits. Six family members were killed in the house.
