Dry/Pleasant Tomorrow; Rain Returns Wednesday Afternoon

| January 31, 2022 @ 3:08 pm

PLEASANT WINTER DAY: With a sunny sky temperatures have warmed into the low and mid 60s across much of Alabama this afternoon. Tonight will be fair and chilly with a low in the 32-39 degree range.

Tomorrow will feature a partly sunny sky with a high in the mid 60s… clouds will increase tomorrow night.

RAIN RETURNS: Expect a cloudy day Wednesday, and rain will move into the northern half of the state by afternoon. Periods of rain will continue Wednesday night… the high Wednesday afternoon will be in the low 60s.

During the day Thursday, we can’t rule out a few scattered showers, but a decent part of the day could very well be dry with a high between 65 and 70 degrees. Then, rain becomes widespread again Thursday night into Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, most of the rain will shift down into South Alabama. Some thunder is possible, but severe storms are not expected with very limited surface based instability.

Rain amounts of 2-3 inches are likely between Wednesday and Friday… there could be a few isolated flooding issues, but probably nothing widespread. Friday will be a colder day with temperatures holding in the 40s over the northern third of Alabama.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Most of the state will be dry Saturday with a high around 50 degrees… the sky will be mostly cloudy, and some rain is possible near the Gulf Coast. Then, a wave will bring a chance of light rain statewide Sunday. The high Sunday will be in the 48-52 degree range, and rain amounts should be 1/2 inch or less for most places.

NEXT WEEK: Global models are not in very good agreement about how events unfold next week, and forecast confidence remains low. For now a decent part of the week is looking dry, but some rain can’t be ruled out Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

NORTH OF ALABAMA: A major winter storm will unfold this week from parts of North and West Texas to northern New England. Snow amounts of 8-12 inches are possible across parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, and freezing rain and ice issues are possible as far south as Arkansas and West Tennessee.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: The barometric pressure at Norway, Alaska, reached 31.85 inches (1078.4 mb) establishing an all-time record for the North American Continent. The temperature at the time of the record was about 46 degrees below zero. The severe arctic cold began to invade the north-central U.S. The temperature at Grand Fall, Montana, plunged 85 degrees in 36 hours. Valentine, Nebraska plummeted from a record high of 70 degrees to zero in just nine hours. Northwest winds gusted to 86 mph at Lander WY, and wind chill readings of 80 degrees below zero were reported in Montana.
