Strong Storms Over Southwest Alabama; Heat Levels Crank Up Next Week

| June 10, 2022 @ 3:03 pm

RADAR CHECK: Strong to severe thunderstorms are pushing through Southwest Alabama this afternoon, where a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8:00 p.m. The main threat with the stronger storms will come from strong straight line winds; some hail is possible as well.

To the north, light to moderate rain is falling over West Alabama. This large area of rain will continue to move eastward over the next few hour before diminishing after sunset. Temperatures are mostly in the 80s across the state this afternoon.

THE WEEKEND: Showers become scarce over the weekend, and heat levels begin to rise. Look for a partly sunny sky with a high in the upper 80s tomorrow, followed by low 90s Sunday. Afternoon showers will be isolated; chance of any one spot getting wet both days is 10-20 percent.

NEXT WEEK: Get ready for the hottest weather so far this year; highs will be in the mid 90s on most days with mostly sunny days and fair nights. You always have some risk of a pop-up storm during the afternoon and evening hours this time of the year, but they should be widely spaced. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected over the next five days. The peak of the season usually comes in August and September.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Flash Flooding occurred in many locations in Mississippi. Highway 80 and many other streets were flooded in and around Vicksburg. Water engulfed one person’s car, but the person was rescued. This event caused $300,000 in property damages. Over 6 inches of rain fell in Lexington in a little over 3 hours.
