Midday Nowcast: Warm and Breezy

| February 22, 2023 @ 10:29 am

With the near record warmth this week, it is certainly feeling more like late spring compared to late winter across Alabama; it is all thanks to strong upper-level ridge in place over the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures are running 15-25 degrees above average for this time of year, and that puts many of us closer to 80° verses low 60s which are more typical. In addition to being warm, is remains quiet breezy today and a wind advisory remains in effect for the northwest counties of the state, where winds could gust to 30/35 mph in spots. Gusts to 25/30 mph are likely across the rest of Alabama. Not much change in the forecast for tomorrow: warm, breezy, mix of sun and clouds, and mainly dry conditions with the exception of a few isolated showers.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A weak cold front will swing through the state Thursday night, and Friday will be a bit cooler with highs in the lower 60s. A few spotty showers can’t be ruled out over the northern counties Friday as the surface front stalls out. For the weekend, showers will be possible across the northern half of Alabama with a mostly cloudy sky, but again, most of us will remain dry with highs generally in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring a chance of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm Monday, but for now severe storms are not expected thanks to the upper ridge, and limited instability. Dry weather is likely Tuesday through Thursday, followed by a chance of rain and storms Friday. Highs through the week will be mostly in the 70s.
