New Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Huntsville Area

| July 20, 2023 @ 6:35 pm

Strong storms approaching northern parts of the Huntsville Metro have prompted a severe thunderstorm warning.

Tons of lightning, torrential rains, and the potential for hail will accompany this storm, so be inside a substantial home or structure as they approach.

Plenty of moisture and instability to work with. CAPE nearly 4,000 joules. Bulk shear 35 knots.

One hour rainfall rates are approaching 2″ in the stronger parts of the storm, so flooding is a possibility.

Looks like the hail core is approaching Normal and area between there and Huntsville along US-231. There could be some nickel sized hail there.

About 32 flashes per minute in lightning.

No tornado monkey business, but we are keeping an eye on it. SRH is 139 m2/s2, which is not low.

Wind damage is the main threat though. Winds could reach 60 mph.
