Mid-Morning Notes

About to be “off the grid” for a couple of hours, doing a weather program this morning at Crestline Elementary in Mountain Brook, followed by a lunch meeting with some of the guys from The Weather Company, including my boss in that organization, the legendary Bill Hardekopf.

A few notes…

*The just completed 12Z NAM shows 0.08″ liquid for Birmingham, which should convert to 1 to 2 inches of snow in this type airmass, if the model is correct. That works well with our ongoing forecast.

*That same run is a little more aggressive with moisture for areas north of Birmingham.

*The NAM is also slower with the incoming system, we never make a forecast change based on one model run. We will look at the full set of global and mesoscale models, and actually look at the system itself before even thinking about any changes.

*For everybody asking about forecasts by other media organizations, you will have to ask them. Most of the products from national organizations are based exclusively on model output, whose thickness fields are not good at all in true Arctic air this far south. Automated products are OK, but in this case you have to have real live meteorologists looking at things before you are get a half way decent forecast. Ask Dr. Tim Coleman about this.

*You can find closings as they are come in on the ABC 33/40 web site here.

*And, if you have been on another planet, here is our plan for tomorrow night’s football game on ABC 33/40.

The full afternoon discussion and the new Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:00 or so. Stay tuned…
