Midday Nowcast: Cloudy with Rain Decreasing
MERRY CHRISTMAS: Certainly a wet start to the day across Alabama with rain and storms, but most of the activity continues to push to the east and we will see improving weather the rest of the day.
It is a mild Christmas Day with highs in the 60s. Tonight, much of the rain will be out of the state and we will see lows in the 30s. Tomorrow, will feature a mix of sun and clouds and cooler temperatures with highs in the upper 50s.
USA BRIEF: A significant winter storm will impact parts of the northern/central Plains and Upper Midwest with heavy snow, freezing rain, and strong winds through Tuesday night. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds (gusts up to 55 mph) will produce blizzard conditions for central South Dakota into much of Nebraska resulting in difficult to near impossible travel.
RECORD COLD IN THE STRATOSPHERE: The temperature of the polar stratosphere just set a 40-year low for the month of December. As a result, strangely-colored clouds are spilling out of the Arctic, with sightings as far south as Italy, Germany and Switzerland. They look like auroras, but they’re not!
REST OF WEEK: The weather will be dry with more sun than clouds, but temperatures will be on a cooling trend. Highs Wednesday will be in the upper 50s, followed by only 40s for Thursday and Friday, a good 10-15 degrees below average for the final days of December. We should see more freezing temperatures as well during the morning hours.
CHILLY WEEKEND WEATHER: It will remain dry this weekend, but it will remain cold. Saturday looks sunny and chilly, with highs in the 40s and lower 50s. Sunday will be about the same but with temperature readings about five degrees warmer than those of Saturday. Morning lows will be in the upper 20s.
BOWL WEATHER: Weather looks dry and cool for the Music City Bowl in Nashville on Saturday with Auburn taking on Maryland. Game day highs will be in the 40s, as will the days leading up to the game. Lows will be in the upper 20s. Bama fans heading west will find warmer conditions for the Rose Bowl. Gameday highs will be in the middle 60s, with lows that morning in the middle 40s.
