No Watch at This Time for Alabama

| January 12, 2024 @ 9:39 am

A quick note from the NSW Huntsville reported that they had talked with the SPC and the NWS in Birmingham and decided to hold off on issuing a watch at this time for Alabama.

Very strong winds aloft are not being carried to the surface yet, and lightning is at a minimum.

Just not many reports of wind damage coming out of Mississippi. The instability is just not high enough to produce strong enough updrafts that can channel those high winds to the surface.

The NWS in Birmingham just issued a significant weather alert for portions of Marion, Pickens and Lamar Counties. So the forecasters there will be using special weather statements for these storms until they begin exhibiting a tendency to produce damage.

Still, having said that, gradient surface winds are gusting to 45 mph at this hour across the western half of the area and those gusty winds will continue until the squall line passes.
