Midday Nowcast: Clouds and Light Rain; More Arctic Air this Weekend

After another freezing start, temperatures are rising into the upper 30s and lower 40s today, and nearly all of Alabama will finely be above freezing for a little while today. Clouds are increasing and some light rain/wintry precipitation is moving into West and Northwest Alabama and will continue to spread east through the afternoon hours and into tonight.

There could be some frozen precipitation across North Alabama and into Tennessee, and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in those areas. For the rest of Alabama, it will be a cold rain and the rain will come to an end from west to east overnight. Lows tonight will be near freezing, so there could be some slick spots overnight and early tomorrow…use caution!!!

MORE ARCTIC AIR: The next surge of Arctic air invades the Deep South tomorrow. The sky will clear with highs in the 30s along with a brisk north wind, making those wind chills likely in the teens. Lows will be in the teens for most of the state Saturday and Sunday mornings and those colder spots will again see single digits lows. Hard Freeze Warnings are in effect for much of Alabama this weekend. Most of North/Central Alabama will stay below freezing all day Saturday. Sunday will begin a slow warming trend as highs climb into 40s. Both days this weekend will feature sunshine in full supply.

PATTERN FLIP: A drastic change in the weather for Alabama next week, as warmer weather returns. We go from the frigid Arctic air over the weekend, to above average temperatures for much of next week. Afternoon highs will return the 50s to start the week, followed by 60s for the second half of the week. The pattern will be active and rain chances will be in the forecast much of next week. Rainfall totals the next seven days for much of Alabama will be in the 1”-2” range.
