Drought Monitor: Some Improvements Especially South

| December 12, 2024 @ 4:15 pm

We have the latest U.S. Drought Monitor information.  Heavy rain across southern Alabama led to widespread improvements to the abnormal dryness and drought conditions there.  Precipitation deficits lessened and the streamflow and soil moisture increased.

The small area of mainly extreme drought (D3) which is situated up along the Alabama/Tennessee line has pretty much remained the same since last week.  The D2 (severe drought) levels dropped from 28.54% of the state to 11.03%.  Over 55% of the state is now under a D1 (moderate drought).

Looking ahead:  The Weather Prediction Center Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts calls for some rain across the state over the next 7 days.  Predicted totals during the period could exceed an 1-1.5 inches across portions of northern Alabama which is desperately needed.  For Central and South over the next 7 days, rain will not be as prevalent and totals during this time are mainly a quarter of an inch or less.
