Midday Nowcast: Sunny and Cold; Rain Returns Late Sunday
Today and tomorrow will feature plenty of sunshine, but temperatures will remain below average with highs in the mid to upper 40s today, but we should see low 50s tomorrow afternoon. Tonight will be another frigid night with upper teens and lower 20s.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For January 24th, the average high for Birmingham is 55° and the average low is 35°. The record high is 78° set in 1950, while the record low is -2° set in 1963. We average 0.17” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 2.45” set in 1964.
ACROSS THE USA: A storm will pass through the southwestern U.S. this weekend with widespread rain and mountain snow. Rainfall will be mostly beneficial but poses a risk for dangerous debris flows over recent burn scars. A significant winter storm will impact Alaska through the weekend with heavy snow across western Alaska and heavy rainfall across Southcentral with strong winds and marine/coastal impacts.
SUNDAY/MONDAY: On Sunday, clouds begin to increase as a weak disturbance will bring rain back to the northern half of the state late Sunday afternoon. We expect periods of rain Sunday night into Monday, but rain amounts won’t be especially heavy, mainly under 1/2 inch. Highs these days will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s across the state.
REST OF NEXT WEEK: Next week will be warmer with highs in the 50s and low 60s, not too far from normal values for the final days of January. The pattern becomes rather active with several chances of rain throughout the week, but still uncertainties remain in the timing of the rain. By the weekend, a widespread rain event is expected as a storm system moves through around February 1st.
