Warmer Days Ahead

First off, some images of the snow on the ground across parts of North Alabama this morning…

There was a dusting across parts of Marion, Winston, Cullman, Morgan, Madison, Jackson and DeKalb counties for a while. The best accumulation was on the ridge tops, especially over 1,500 feet. Thanks to our readers and viewers for sending these to us.

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

WARM-UP ON THE HORIZON: Interesting to note that Birmingham is reporting 41 degrees at 2:00, which is 27 degrees below the average high of 68 for March 22. Some communities over Northeast Alabama did not get out of the 30s today. The good news is that cold snaps don’t last long in early spring, and we are promising warmer weather in the days ahead.

I fully expect the clouds to hang tough through the night, and there is a good chance the overcast will still be there when you wake up tomorrow morning. But, we expect those morning clouds to give way to afternoon sunshine, and if the sun does indeed return as expected, we should rise into the mid to upper 60s tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Wednesday promises to be a spectacular day, with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 70s. Then, clouds begins to return during the day Thursday, and we will continue to mention a chance of showers Thursday night and Friday. This does not look like a major rain producing system, with amounts expected to be under 1/2 inch.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday looks like a great day, with ample sunshine and a high in the low 70s. But, watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 12Z GFS is now bringing in another upper low with a chance of showers as early as Sunday. Then, Monday of next week features the passage of that deep upper low, so it could very well be a repeat performance of today; cold and raw with a cloudy sky and some light rain or drizzle. Maybe even a few snow flakes across high terrain of Northeast Alabama.

LONG RANGE: Changeable will remain the word… but the good news is that for now we don’t see any threat of a major severe weather outbreak for the next 15 days or so, based on the 12Z GFS. Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record this week’s show tomorrow night.
