Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Colbert, Franklin, and Lawrence Counties Until 3:30 AM

| May 17, 2025 @ 2:34 am

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southern Colbert County, all of Franklin County, and southern portions of Lawrence County in northwest Alabama. This warning is in effect until 3:30 AM CDT.

At 2:30 AM, a line of severe thunderstorms was moving east at about 55 miles per hour. This line extended from near Belmont to Detroit and southeast of Amory, and is expected to continue its eastward march across northwest Alabama.

These storms are packing wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and quarter-size hail. That’s strong enough to cause damage to roofs, siding, trees, and vehicles, especially if you’re caught in the open or driving.

Communities that may be impacted include Russellville, Mt Hope, Wren, Littleville, La Grange, and Tharptown. Folks in these areas need to get to a sturdy shelter now—preferably an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built structure.

These storms are also producing frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck. Stay indoors and avoid electrical appliances until the storm has safely passed.
