Flash Flood Warning for Jefferson and Shelby Counties Until 9:30 AM

| May 18, 2025 @ 7:12 am

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Flash Flood Warning for central Jefferson County and northwestern Shelby County, effective until 9:30 AM CDT. Radar estimates indicate that 1 to 2 inches of rain have already fallen across this area, with another inch possible as additional thunderstorms continue to track through the region.

This heavy rainfall is leading to flash flooding of small creeks and streams, low-lying roadways, underpasses, and areas of poor drainage. Urban flooding is likely in places like downtown Birmingham, Hoover, Homewood, Alabaster, and Vestavia Hills. Other communities within the warned area include Bessemer, Pelham, Mountain Brook, Trussville, Helena, Gardendale, Leeds, Irondale, and Fultondale.

Residents in the warned area should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and avoid driving through flooded roads. Floodwaters may rise quickly and become dangerous, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Motorists should remember the rule: turn around, don’t drown.

If you live near a creek, stream, or poor drainage area, monitor conditions closely and be ready to take action should water levels rise rapidly. This is a dangerous weather situation and should be treated seriously until the warning expires or is canceled by the National Weather Service.
