Central Alabama NOAA Weatheradios WILL NOT WORK Tonight

| May 20, 2025 @ 10:29 am

NOAA Weather Radio is currently off the air across central Alabama due to a scheduled system upgrade at the National Weather Service in Birmingham, and the outage will continue through Wednesday, May 21.

Unfortunately, this comes as a round of severe storms is expected tonight. Damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes are possible across much of central Alabama between 5 PM and 3 AM.

With NOAA Weather Radio unavailable, it’s more important than ever to have multiple other ways to receive warnings—such as wireless emergency alerts on your phone, local television or radio, and reliable weather apps.

Please tell friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers about this outage. You are our NOAA Weatheradio Ambassadors and we need to spread the word that tonight is one time we won’t have it as a tool in our toolbelt. It is the only time that I can remember since it came online here in November 1976.

The NWS Birmingham office remains fully staffed but our warnings will come from the NWS Peachtree City GA.

CLARIFICATION
The NWS Birmingham radar operations team has been temporarily relocated to the National Weather Service office in Atlanta/Peachtree City, where they will be issuing convective watches and warnings for Central Alabama this evening.

We will be with you tonight with a live blogcast starting at 6 p.m. CDT.
