Folks in Northwest Alabama and along the Alabama-Mississippi line are waking up to some rain and perhaps some thunder as well. Radar showed a line of thunderstorms stretching from just west of Nashville, TN, to about Muscle Shoals, AL, to Jackson, MS. A number of severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Northwest Alabama, but the storms are moving into more stable air. As they do, storms should decrease in intensity. But for the next couple of hours, damaging wind threat remains high for people from Columbus, MS, to Hamilton to Florence and Moulton. Just above the surface the wind was screaming out of the south at 50 knots, so isolated damaging wind will be the main threat for the next several hours.

While the present storms should diminish in intensity through the morning as they move east, some redevelopment is possible later today during much of the afternoon. While instability is marginal, isolated strong to severe storms will be possible. The SPC is not outlooking a specific area because of the expected isolated nature of these storms. The area from Mobile to Birmingham to Huntsville and just to the east of that could see some isolated severe events this afternoon.

The upper low and trough responsible for the developing weather moves off to the northeast rapidly today and tonight as the strong ridge over the East Coast maintains its hold. The ridge should build back into our area tomorrow paving the way for a beautiful Easter Sunday.

The ridge and the surface high pressure will hold us in good weather for several days until the next strong trough comes out of the Rockies on Wednesday and Thursday. This trough will bring a front into the Southeast Wednesday and across Central Alabama Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. By Thursday at midday the weather is expected to be well to our east. This system packs a small cool punch as we see the warm temperatures dip backwards for Thursday and Friday – highs in the 70s will feel great.

And it warms up for next weekend as the highs climb back toward the 80-degree mark.

It’s a big day for Apple enthusiasts or anyone interested in the iPad. I’ll be headed out toward The Summit myself in a little while. Going to be interesting to see just how big the crowds are. Hope I can get into the store. Nice that the weather is looking good for Easter Sunday. Enjoy the day whatever you have planned. Stay tuned to the Blog for the latest weather information. Godspeed.
