Light Rain Moving In

| December 15, 2010 @ 3:04 am | 3 Replies

Light rain has begun over eastern Mississippi and western Alabama within the last hour, but no ice has been reported as of 3 AM. The automated weather observations in Oxford and Columbus, Mississippi showed light rain with temperatures in the lower 30s. Dewpoints were in the single digits.

One of the things we will be watching is the relationship between temperature and dewpoint. If enough rain falls to create rapid evaporative cooling, the northwest corner of Alabama could ice up very quickly. If the rain stays light, we will still have some bridge icing, but with air temperatures in the lower to middle 30s, the ice will be a little less intense.

We welcome you to comment on the blog to let us know about icing conditions in your area, or you can tweet us or e-mail us.
