COOL MORNING: A few spots have dipped into the 30s this morning… observations from our Skywatchers at 5:00 include 38 at Center Point and 39 at Fayette… we also note the Gadsden Airport has dropped to 37 degrees. Most places are in the low to mid 40s. The sky is completely clear.

WARMEST SO FAR THIS YEAR: We warm quickly into the upper 70s today as a warm ridge aloft builds across the Deep South. Tomorrow we are forecasting a high of 82, and if we hit that, it will be the warmest day so far this year… topping the 81 degree high we enjoyed back on February 28.

WARM WEEKEND: We see no reason for any weather change over the weekend as the ridge strengthens. Lots of sun, highs in the low 80s. The average high for this time of the year is 68, so we are well above that, but below the record highs that are mostly in the 87-90 degree range for the next five to seven days.

NEXT WEEK: The weather stays warm and dry Monday and Tuesday, and once again there is a good chance we see a high in the low 80s. Then a cold front is due in here Wednesday night, and it will bring the potential for a few showers, but the GFS continues to show only light and spotty rain with this feature. Then, we turn noticeably cooler Thursday and Friday. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see we could see highs dropping to near 60 Thursday, with potential for upper 30s by Friday morning of next week. For now the risk of a widespread, major late season freeze looks small with the coldest air holding to the north and east of Alabama.

LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any serious severe weather threat or Arctic air invasion through the rest of the month, but we continue to note the NAO spikes negative around the first of April, which means we will have to watch for any potential for a late season freeze during the first week of April.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
