WARMING UP: All reporting stations across Alabama this afternoon are well into the 70s with a cloudless sky, and we are still projecting a high of 82 tomorrow, and if we reach that it will be the warmest day so far this year, beating the 81 degree high we measured on February 28. And, if we reach 82, it will be 14 degrees above the average high of 68, and 6 degrees sky of the record high of 88 set on March 19, 1982.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: Warm is the word this weekend. Afternoon highs will stay in the low 80s, although we will be watching the CAD situation for Sunday (CAD=cold air damming)… cold air over the Northeast U.S. will drain down the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains, and temperatures will be colder across the Carolinas and parts of Georgia. It might be a case where some communities near the Georgia border will be cooler Sunday, but for most of Alabama I don’t think the wedge will be in play.

NEXT WEEK: Warm and dry continues Monday and Tuesday… then a cold front passes through Wednesday night with a chance of showers, but nothing really heavy and no severe weather with the upper support so far north. Then, slightly cooler moves into the state Thursday and Friday, but for now it looks like the coldest air will remain pretty far to the north and east of Alabama.

LONG RANGE: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 12Z GFS shows potential for strong or severe thunderstorms around March 30. And, we have noted for several days the forecast negative spike of the North Atlantic Oscillation around the beginning of April. The operational runs of the GFS really didn’t reflect this, but all of a sudden the 12Z run is on board with a high amplitude look around April 1-2 with potential for some very cold air to move down into Alabama. Confidence is growing that a late season freeze will be likely around that time… but of course we can’t be specific this early in the game.
