Heating Up For Memorial Day

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

IT’S OVER: We can declare the 2011 tornado season over for the state of Alabama. It was one for the books; memorable and truly tragic. As summer begins, the stronger winds aloft move north, and we are usually stuck in a maritime tropical airmass, with sufficient moisture most days for “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms”. Those don’t produce tornadoes since wind fields are light, and unless we have some kind of tropical system around here, our next tornado threat most likely won’t come until the fall season, which is November and December. We can finally catch our breath.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Drier air has moved into Alabama this morning, and today will be less humid with a partly to mostly sunny sky along with a high in the low to mid 80s.. We stay dry tomorrow through Monday, and the weather heats up as an upper ridge builds and strengthens. We reach 90 tomorrow, followed by low 90s Sunday and Monday. The weekend that is the kickoff to summer will be a great one for baseball tournaments, pool parties, or anything else you want to do outdoors.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will stay hot next week, and generally dry. However, a weak surface front will drift down into extreme North Alabama and stall out at mid-week, which might kick off a few widely scattered showers and storms Wednesday or Thursday.

AT THE BEACH: Look for mostly sunny days and clear nights along the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through most of next week. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the low to mid 80s, and the ocean water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on the Alabama Coast was 79 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will record a Friday night special tonight at 8:30 p.m. CDT since I will be on vacation next week. A TV meteorologist from Joplin, MO will be joining us.

Today marks the one month anniversary of the April 27 Alabama tornado tragedy; I will be out in the field this afternoon and probably won’t be able to produce an afternoon Weather Xtreme video, but I will post a few thoughts and forecast notes later today. Enjoy the day!
