The rain that came through Central Alabama was a welcome event! The high temperature at my house only reached 86 degrees, my coldest high since May 27th – nearly three weeks! Unfortunately we are back into the afternoon heat for the next few days – at least mid-week – but there is some hope that we’ll see a break in the overall weather pattern that could bring Central Alabama and much of the Southeast back into the land of those average temperatures for this time of year.

For the immediate future, the upper ridge will build back into the Southeast restoring the heat through mid-week. While we will see the possibility of isolated showers today and perhaps Sunday, the ridge should be strong enough on Monday and Tuesday to completely suppress showers. But then here come some changes.

A strong closed low with an associated trough will move out of the Rockies on Wednesday. The amplitude of the trough should be enough to drag a front into the Southeast on Thursday. This will set the stage for some additional clouds and enhanced rain chances for us. Best rain chances are likely to come on Thursday and Friday as the upper trough moves across the Mississippi River dragging the front into the Southeast. This should also bring down temperatures with highs climbing only into the upper 80s for Thursday into Saturday – and that will be a welcome change.

The trough sets up residence on the East Coast by Saturday and Sunday keeping us in the cooler northerly flow. And this upper air pattern sticks around for much of the next week, too, with a general weakness over the eastern half of the country. This should keep the heat down and daily chances for showers as we head into the latter part of June.

Rainfall amounts will be spotty at best through Wednesday, but there is hope for a fairly good dousing of rain Thursday and Friday for most of us. This extends beyond the 5-day rainfall projections but I would expect rainfall amounts to be in the one inch range.

SPC continues to outlook a slight risk to our north for severe thunderstorms on Day 1 and Day 2. And the tropics remain quiet.

I’ve had a wonderful week at Fort Morgan. Saw a few thunderstorms, but had no rain for the whole week. The beach house was a bit off the beaten path, but that fit our group of four couples nicely. And our very own pool to go with the beach. But all good things much come to an end, so I will be heading up I-65 later this morning. That means getting out of the vacation mode! Ah las, back to a regular life. I hope you have a great day. Godspeed.
