A cold front moved through the area yesterday during the day and brought much drier air to Central Alabama. My dew point dropped from about 72 around noon yesterday to a nice 52 this morning. Watch the video for a graphical plot of the change. So temperatures are down in the 50s this morning and will be again Sunday morning. Early risers may need a light jacket when they head out in the very early morning. But you’ll shed that jacket soon enough as temperatures are expected to rebound to near 80 today and lower 80s tomorrow.

In the upper atmosphere, a big closed low was centered in the vicinity of Chicago this morning. That closed low will meander for a couple of days before finally heading off to the northeast slowly on Monday and Tuesday. A small short wave digs into the lower Mississippi River Valley on Wednesday. The closed low will move off to the northeast but as it does it will drag a front into our area on Monday. That boundary will stick around as any southward push diminishes. So we stay with a chance of showers from Monday through Wednesday.

By Wednesday, the small short wave moves to the Central Gulf Coast which should be just enough to bring drier weather back to Central Alabama. Then the surface high centered over Illinois begins influencing our weather with the prospects for another beautiful Fall weekend next weekend, too.

Tropics are again active. We have a cloud mass in the Bahamas but that disturbance is unlikely to develop. Near the northern Windward Islands we have Ophelia which continued to be rather disorganized. Way out in the eastern Atlantic we have Tropical Depression 17 which is likely to become a tropical storm later today. Projections suggest this will stay out to sea just as Opheila is expected to do.

No big changes in the long term. The big ridge does become a factor in our weather around October 5th or so. This means that we should stay with relatively warm weather.
