Some Sun Possible Later Today
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
THIS MORNING: Clouds are hanging tough across Alabama this morning with temperatures mostly in the low to mid 60s, where they have been for the past 24 hours. We will be optimistic and forecast some partial clearing later today, but we all know that lingering clouds in this setup can tend to be rather stubborn. If the sun can break through, we should reach the 70s today, and the chance of a shower is very small for any one given spot.
TO THE WEST: We note SPC has a slight risk of severe weather defined for the area roughly from Lufkin, Texas to St. Louis; the risk is large hail and gusty winds as a cold front slices through that region.
TOMORROW: A cold front will pass through our state with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. I guess a strong storm is possible during the afternoon ahead of the front, but I don’t expect a problem with severe weather with limited dynamics. Rain amounts of around 1/4 to 1/2 inch seem likely.
The RPM suggests that by tomorrow evening the showers and storms should be east of I-65, and all of the rain should be out of the state by 10:00 p.m.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Some fine fall weather. Sunny pleasant days, fair cool nights. Highs in the 70s Friday and Saturday, and close to 80. We expect early morning lows in the upper 40s early Saturday and Sunday morning. With the fall colors now begin to show up nicely, it will be a great weekend to get outside and enjoy a little fresh air.
NEXT WEEK: The weather stays dry Tuesday, but a deep upper trough will push a strong cold front through Alabama Tuesday with our next chance of showers and storms, followed by what looks to be the coolest air so far this season by Wednesday and Thursday. We might not make it out of the 50s Wednesday, and there is potential for the first good frost of the season for much of North Alabama by early Thursday. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
TROPICS: While the Atlantic basin remains quiet, we do note Hurricane Jova in the East Pacific is moving into the Mexican coast this morning with sustained winds of 85 mph. High moisture from this hurricane is streaming across the Gulf. Again, check out the Weather Xtreme video for more info.
WEATHERFEST: If you like weather, you need to come to the McWane Science Center in downtown Birmingham this Saturday for the kickoff to the 2011 National Weather Association annual meeting which is here in Birmingham this year. There will be lots to see and do, including the ABC 33/40 “Who Wants To Be A Meteorologist” exhibit where you get to go on the big green wall and do the weather. We will give you a USB drive with the video to take home. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and the weather will be perfect.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
CONNECT: You can find me on all of the major social networks…
I will be speaking on the campus of the University of Montevallo today… look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 or so this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
