Gradual Clearing

| November 30, 2011 @ 6:00 am

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

BRIGHTER DAYS AHEAD: Most of Alabama is still covered in clouds early this morning, although the sky is clear down at Mobile. We all know how the clearing process after the passage of a deep upper low like this can take longer that you expect, but we will roll down the optimistic highway and forecast gradual clearing today with sunshine returning this afternoon. The weather stays cool with a high only in the upper 40s in most spots. And, as usual, don’t be shocked if the clouds hang tough all day over the northeast corner of the state.

Tomorrow and Friday will be nice with a good supply of sunshine and a warming trend; we reach the upper 50s tomorrow and low to mid 60s Friday.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday will be dry and mild with a high in the mid 60s. And, the 00Z GFS is much slower with the next system, and now it looks like Sunday will be dry with mid 60s again, although high clouds will probably increase during the day.

NEXT WEEK: If you believe the latest GFS, the main rain event might hold off until Monday night or Tuesday as the upper trough hangs back, and a surface front becomes stationary Sunday night and Monday northwest of Alabama. But, for now will keep with persistence and forecast the best chance of rain on Monday, followed by colder air Tuesday. Just keep in mind the confidence on timing is low… see the Weather Xtreme video for details.

LONG RANGE: The NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) actually shows a strong positive spike toward mid-December, which certainly does’t favor any big Arctic outbreaks here, and the operational GFS doesn’t show any at this point. It can get cold with a positive NAO, but not very often.

FACEBOOK COMMENTS: Thanks to all of you for your understanding in the reason for the new comment structure here. We do know that a few of you don’t use social media, but the overwhelming majority of our readers do have a Facebook account, and enabling Facebook comments will give us time to focus on what we are paid to do, and not patrol the blog for the trolls all day and all night. If you want to make a comment about weather to me and choose not to use Facebook for a comment here, just drop me an email… jspann@abc3340.com. Or, on Twitter at @spann. I will be listening.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I will be doing a weather program this morning for the kids at the Lula Brown HeadStart Center in Gadsden… look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 or so this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
