THIS AFTERNOON: Rain has become widespread across Northwest Alabama this afternoon… ahead of a cold front that is just west of Muscle Shoals. East of the front, Tuscaloosa has reached 71, but behind the front Memphis has a cold rain and 39 degrees.

TONIGHT-WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Rain will continue to increase across Alabama tonight, and we will forecast periods of rain tomorrow and Wednesday along with a trend toward colder temperatures. We should hold in the 50s all day tomorrow, but areas northwest of Birmingham could stay in the 40s, and our friends to the southeast might see temperatures reaching the low 60s.

The surface front just won’t move quickly until the strong disturbance over the Southwest U.S. kicks out. The rain should continues at times through Wednesday. And, Wednesday sure looks cold and raw with just about all of North/Central Alabama holding in the 40s. The 12Z NAM is printing 0.42″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is now much more aggressive with 1.31″. I think most places have a good shot now of getting one inch of rain over the next 72 hours. No flooding, and probably no thunder. Just plain, ole rain.

SNOW FLAKES? We note almost all of the 12Z model runs… including the GFS, ECMWF, GEMS, and RPM bring a strong disturbance through the state Wednesday night, with thickness values dropping enough for a few snow flakes, mainly over the northern third of the state, generally along and north of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). This would be nothing more than snow flurries or showers, and probably won’t amount to anything. I guess a heavier snow shower could make the ground white in spots, but that seems pretty unlikely right now.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The sky becomes sunny on Thursday, but we stay cool with a high close to 50. Friday will be another sunny and cool day with a high in the mid 50s.

WEEKEND PEEK: Sunny, cool weather continues over the weekend. Highs should stay in the 50-55 degree range, with lows mostly in the 20s.

And, the dry weather should continue into early next week. See the Weather Xtreme video for long range ideas.
