Cool, Dry Weather

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

CALM WEATHER: Most Alabama communities are below freezing at daybreak today… and cool, dry, stable air will be the story for Alabama through the weekend. We rise to near 50 today, and into the mid 50s tomorrow, but a fresh supply of colder air drops in here on Saturday, dropping the high into the mid to upper 40s. Looks like the coldest morning will come early Sunday with mid 20s likely, but we should be below freezing every morning through the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: Our weather stays dry Monday and Tuesday, but the 00Z GFS shows a pretty robust little system forming west of the state at mid-week, which would bring our next chance of rain and storms late Wednesday night into Thursday. And, that run shows no real cold air in the wake of the system; see the Weather Xtreme video for long range details and ideas.

WINTER THOUGHTS? Winter will “officially” arrive on December 21 at 11:30 p.m. CST; that is our shortest day of the year in terms of the amount of daylight, and it is also the day with the lowest sun angle. I often get asked about my thoughts on what the winter will be like here across the Deep South, and my general answer is “I don’t know”. There is very little skill in seasonal outlooks, and I don’t even try it. But, odds of this winter being as cold and snowy as last year is pretty small. The winter of 2010-2011 featured a number of significant snow events, and many Alabama cities saw their first White Christmas on record. Never say never, but odds of that happening back to back aren’t very good.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
