Wet Friday; A Brighter Weekend

| December 16, 2011 @ 6:18 am

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RAIN AT TIMES: Periods of light rain will continue across Alabama today as a slow moving cold front passes through. There is very little upper support, and we still expect rain amounts of mostly 1/2 inch or less. The NAM is at 0.44″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is drier with 0.20″. The heavier totals will be north of Birmingham, with lighter amounts to the south. Temperatures will be cooler today due to the lack of sun, with a high near 60 in most places. Northwest Alabama will hold in the mid 50s most of the day.

COOL, DRY WEEKEND: The rain ends this evening, and we still expect a good supply of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday. The weather will be cooler, highs tomorrow will be in the low to mid 50s, followed by a high in the 57-60 degree range Sunday afternoon. Sunday morning will be cold with a light freeze likely for many communities around here.

NEXT WEEK: The next system coming out of the Southwest U.S. will bring rain by Tuesday, possibly lingering into Wednesday morning. Beyond that, it looks like we will have more rain before Christmas, but the models have been all over the board on timing around the Christmas weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details, but one thing is pretty certain… the weather won’t be very cold this year and we won’t have a White Christmas, like last year. But, we can always dream… (or head north)…

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Eleven years ago today an EF-4 tornado tore through the southern part of Tuscaloosa killing 11 people; I will write more about this later this morning.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I have a weather program this morning at Chelsea Park Elementary… and please don’t forget this is the last day for our annual Toys for Tots drive… be sure and drop a new, unwrapped toy by any of the drop off locations, and I will be live at the Legacy BBQ on Alabama 150 in Hoover next door to Applebees this afternoon at 4,5, and 6 as we wrap everything up. We hope to hit the goal of 80,000 toys.

The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30 or so this afternoon… enjoy the day!
