Warm In December? Not Really Unusual Here

| December 21, 2011 @ 7:02 am

Warm spells like this in December are actually very common in Alabama. Last year’s cold and snowy Christmas was a big anomaly.

Our warmest December temperature is 80 degrees, recorded on December 7, 1951. Today’s record high is 73 set in 1923.

On Christmas Eve in 1964, the high in Birmingham was 77 degrees!

For those that say they “can’t remember it being this warm at Christmas”… they have a very short memory. One of our warmest Decembers came in 1984, when 6 daily record highs were established with readings well into the 70s. Just a few years ago, in 2008, we soared to 75 degrees on December 27.

These warm spells are also a reminder that this is the fall tornado season. Some of our most violent tornado outbreaks in Alabama have come during the months of November and December. So, having a severe weather threat is not unusual right before Christmas. I have worked many late December severe weather outbreaks in my career.

If you are looking for consistently cold weather at Christmas, you have to head north.
