The rain is gone from Central Alabama with the cold front now stretching from a surface low in northwestern South Carolina southwestward across the Florida Panhandle and into the Central Gulf of Mexico. While the rain is gone the clouds are likely to stick around for much of the day with some possibility that we’ll see a few breaks in the clouds by late afternoon. Temperatures even with the clouds will climb into the lower 60s, so we remain mild for early February.

While the overall pattern continues to be active with a number of disturbances running through the flow, nothing of any real significance will affect us over much of the upcoming 7 days. So we are likely to remain dry and mild with a slight downward turn in temperatures but nothing of an extreme nature. Typical highs and lows for early February are 56 and 35 and we are going to stay at or slightly above those values for the next week.

While traveling weather systems move across the northern US, they continue to lack the fetch to get down into our area. A huge closed low will be developing over Hudson Bay with a clear fetch from the Arctic Circle to the Great Lakes. The cold air is likely to get down to the Ohio River Valley but not much further south than that. So while we cool down a tad, there is still no sign of anything of an extreme nature for the next week.

The cold air and the huge low over Hudson Bay moves off to the east by next Sunday. While all this is happening, a fairly substantial closed low digs into Mexico along the US west coast. This will finally dissipate and come out across the Gulf Coast region next Sunday producing wet weather for much of the Gulf. The GFS suggests there could be some rain possibility for us, however, the ECMWF is drier than the GFS with much of the precipitation suppressed well into the Gulf.

Looking further out in time, the GFS suggests another wet system around February 16th. After that the GFS develops another cold look and this time there may be some potential for much colder air to reach the Southeast US. The NAO is forecast to go negative after the 16th, so perhaps we’ll see some of that extreme cold over Canada make it further south. Seems to me that this is bound to happen sooner or later. While the mild weather is nice, we can’t simply go all winter without a good cold period, so maybe this is one of those. Only time will tell!!
