Records Fall Across Alabama

TOO WARM FOR MARCH: As expected, we have at least one new record high…

Huntsville hit 84 degrees at 3:00… that beats the old record high of 82 set way back in 1946. Based on hourly observations, Birmingham’s high so far today is 83, just one degree shy of the record, but we will get the complete data set shortly and we could very well be in record territory as well. One of the warmest spots at 3:00 is Tuscaloosa with 85 degrees… which is one degree shy of the record high of 86 set in 1982.

RADAR CHECK: Just a handful of widely scattered showers are on radar at mid-afternoon; stronger storms are to the north over Tennessee and Kentucky where a severe thunderstorm watch has been posted. Showers will end later this evening, and we could very well see more fog late tonight.

WARM WEATHER HERE FOR A WHILE: Our weather really won’t change much in coming days. Afternoon highs will hold in the 80 to 85 degree range through the middle of next week… that is 15 to 20 degrees above average for mid-March. We will maintain the risk of a few scattered showers and storms tomorrow, but those showers will become fewer in number over the weekend as the upper ridge gets even stronger.

NEXT WEEK: No real change… basically warm and dry Monday through Wednesday as the upper system to the west just creeps along. Heavy rain will be an issue for Texas and Oklahoma, slowly moving into Louisiana and Arkansas by mid-week. Finally, some evidence we might see an increase in the chance of showers and storms late in the week, but the upper air system will be much weaker and not very dynamic at that point.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: Still no sign of any freeze threat, severe weather problems, or heavy rain (on a widespread basis) through the end of March as the primary storm track across North America remains well to the north of Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
