Here are the record highs for Birmingham for the next few days…

Today (March 15) 84 (1984)
March 16 84 (1982)
March 17 86 (1963)
March 18 88 (1982)
March 19 89 (1982)
March 20 87 (1907)

Seems like our best chance of getting up into record territory will be today and tomorrow, but we will stay very warm all the way through the weekend as the summer-like pattern continues. The primary storm track across North America is well to the north, and our highs will be in the 80 to 85 degree range. Each day will feature a mix of sun and clouds, and there will be sufficient moisture and instability for the daily risk of widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. And, like yesterday, where storms do happen to form, they could be pretty strong for a brief time. No risk of tornadoes, but the stronger storms could produce some hail and gusty winds.

OVER THE WEEKEND: A deep upper trough will form over the western U.S… setting up cold and unsettled weather there. It will move only slowly to the east, so our weather won’t change much early next week. However, a significant severe weather setup is possible for North Texas and the Southern Plains Sunday and Monday in the battleground zone between the cold air to the east and the warm air to the east.

NEXT WEEK: The 00Z GFS shows the upper trough out west evolving into an upper low that will be over the Lower Mississippi Valley by the middle of the week, and it could very well give us a chance at more widespread showers and thunderstorms by Thursday and Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for details and more long range ideas. Still no sign of any late season freeze, or major severe weather issues here through the rest of March.

AT THE BEACH: Other than periods of dense sea fog, the weather looks great from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the weekend, and into early next week, with mostly sunny days and fair nights. Highs on the immediate coast will be around 70, with mid to upper 70s inland. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab reported an ocean water temperature of 69 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
