GOOD SOAKING: The big “pollen flush” continues across Alabama this afternoon with a large band of rain and thunderstorms in place across the state. Radar data suggests much of West Alabama has received over one inch of rain today, with lighter amounts to the the east. A tornado watch remains in effect for far Southwest Alabama, but there is no significant threat of severe weather for the northern half of the state tonight, but occasional showers and a few storms will continue.

TOMORROW: We will maintain a chance of showers and storms, although it certainly won’t rain all day. In fact, we might see some morning sunshine as drier air in the mid levels works into the state from the northwest. If the sun does break out, then a few strong storms are possible tomorrow afternoon, and the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has defined a standard “slight risk” of severe weather for much of the state. Helicity values are very marginal, so tornadoes shouldn’t be an issue, but we might hear of some hail and gusty winds with the stronger storms. We might touch 80 tomorrow if the sun breaks out.

OUR WEEKEND: Drier air works into the state Saturday; just an outside risk of a stray shower, otherwise the sky becomes partly sunny with a high in the upper 70s. Sunday looks delightful, with lots sun, lower humidity, and a high between 77 and 80 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: We stay dry Monday and Tuesday with a high between 78 and 81… a weak front might kick off a few showers over North Alabama late Wednesday and Thursday, but there is little upper support and it doesn’t look like a big rain event. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely tomorrow along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores… but on Saturday look for increasing amounts of sunshine and fewer showers, and then the weather looks sunny each day Sunday through Wednesday of next week. Highs will stay in the low 70s along the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 71 degrees.
