THIS AFTERNOON: Montgomery has soared to 85 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon… other reports include 83 at Tuscaloosa, 82 at Birmingham, and 81 in Anniston. The sky is mostly sunny, and we see nothing on the radar.

The weather stays warm through the rest of the week, with highs in the 81 to 85 degree range, well above the average high of 70 for late March, and within 4 to 5 degrees of daily record highs.

Low level moisture levels will slowly creep up in coming days, and we might see a shower on radar in spots each afternoon, but they will be very widely spaced, and most Alabama communities will be dry through Friday as the upper ridge hangs tough.

OUR WEEKEND: We still expect a much better chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. The 12Z GFS has actually come in a little drier, but the ECMWF, which has performed better this season, looks relatively wet, and we will maintain a good chance of showers and storms Saturday. We expect about 2 to 3 hours of rain, with rain amounts of about 1/2 inch likely. The severe weather potential looks pretty low at this point, but a strong storm can’t be ruled out. The sky will be generally cloudy with a high in the upper 70s.

Sunday looks relatively dry, with only an outside risk of a stray shower or thunderstorm. With some sun, the high Sunday should reach the low 80s in many places.

NEXT WEEK: No doubt the pattern changes and the eastern U.S. will turn colder. But, the details will remain unresolved until we get closer. A strong upper trough will push a cold front through Alabama Monday night or early Tuesday; there could be some risk of strong to severe storms along this front, then cooler air invades for the latter half of the week. We might have one or two mornings with potential for frost or a freeze. Growers will need to monitor forecasts for next week as we get closer.

Sure seems like April will be cooler than March, generally speaking, for much of the eastern U.S. with the pattern change. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.
