No Weather Xtreme video this afternoon… I am in Des Moines for a weather conference this weekend… Listening now to a fascinating talk on the Joplin, MO tornado by Mike Davis of the NWS in Springfield. I will speak tomorrow on the April 27 event.

BIG DOWNPOURS: Strong storms are producing heavy rain in scattered pockets across Alabama this afternoon. These showers and storms will fade away in the 5:00 to 7:00 time frame as the MCV driving them moves on to the east, and the atmosphere becomes more stable. Looks like some spots received over one inch if rain today, but amounts were very variable.

SATURDAY: Looks like a very summer-like day. Partly sunny, a high in the low 80s, and the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. The coverage of the storms won’t be anything like today; the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three tomorrow, and most of the showers will come during the 3:00 to 7:00 time frame.

We actually might see a storm tomorrow afternoon reaching severe limits. The tornado threat is low, but stronger storms could produce some hail and gusty winds.

SUNDAY: The day looks generally warm and dry with only a small risk of a shower. The high should be in the mid 80s with a good supply of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK: Still quite a degree of uncertainty next week with model inconsistency. The 12Z GFS shows an upper low developing west of the state early in the week, and this will enhance the chance of showers and storms on Tuesday, and maybe even into Wednesday. There will be a risk of strong to severe storms with this feature, but defining the exact risks is difficult at this stage of the game. We will watch model trends closely over the weekend and keep you posted.

Much cooler air will invade the state over the latter half of the week. For now it looks like we stay out of frost range, but that could change. I still think we have a decent chance at one more morning with a frost/freeze risk.

Brian Peters is on duty at the Barber Motorsports Park this weekend and will have updates tomorrow and Sunday…. We get back to the regular production schedule Monday. Enjoy the weekend!
