THIS AFTERNOON: For the second day in a row, expected thunderstorms have not shown up over North Alabama. And, for the second day in a row, an MCS (mesoscale convective system) has moved along the Gulf Coast, disrupting the info of moist Gulf air into this part of the state. These masses of storms on the coast were not handled well by models. Temperatures are generally in the low 80s, and the radar over North Alabama is quiet early this afternoon.
SPC has dropped the severe weather risk for Alabama, but we will maintain some risk of showers tonight as the upper low over the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles drifts closer.
TOMORROW: Still looks wet at times with the upper low finally picking up some speed; the feature should be north of Memphis late in the day, and with the increased dynamic lift we have to expect a decent chance of showers and thunderstorms. SPC has roughly the southern half of Alabama in their standard “slight risk” of severe weather tomorrow, but a few storms over the northern counties could reach severe limits as well. The tornado threat continues to look very low, with hail and gusty winds being the main threat. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The weather turns cooler Friday with a high only in the low 70s with a cool northwest breeze and a partly sunny sky. We can go ahead and remove that slight risk of a shower since the air looks very dry.
The Easter weekend still looks delightful, with sunny mild days and clear cool nights. Highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the 70s, with early morning lows in the 40s.
FROST THREAT NEXT WEEK: Even colder air is forecast to blow into Alabama by the middle of next week, and the 12Z model set is still on board with this idea. Looks like won’t get past the mid 60s Tuesday, and there is a real possibility of frost at daybreak Wednesday of next week, with lows in the 32-40 degree range over the northern half of Alabama. Of course, we are still a week out, but growers will need to monitor our forecasts in coming days. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
