THIS MORNING: The weather is quiet across Alabama this morning, but active storms continue west of the state over South Mississippi and much of Louisiana. The upper low driving all of this is over the Texas Panhandle.

Later today we expect to see a marked increase in showers and thunderstorms across Alabama, which will continue at times tonight and tomorrow. As discussed here in recent days, the tornado threat looks very low with rather unidirectional wind profiles. But, the stronger storms could produce hail and gusty winds, and the Storm Prediction Center has much of Alabama in the standard “slight risk” of severe weather today and tomorrow. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, but the distribution of the rain won’t be very even. Showers and storms will end tomorrow night.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Cooler and drier air blows into Alabama on Friday with a high in the low 70s and a partly sunny sky. I have a slight risk of a stray shower Friday in the ongoing forecast, but I will probably drop that later today as 12Z model data comes in.

Weather for the Easter weekend couldn’t be better. Sunny pleasant days, clear, cool, crisp nights. Highs will be in the 70s, and lows generally in the 40s.

NEXT WEEK: We will mention some risk of scattered showers late Monday with a cold front, but there is little moisture to work with, and significant rain doesn’t look likely. Then, on Tuesday, a deep upper trough sets up over the eastern third of the nation, setting the stage for a late season “cold snap” here.

The GFS is printing a high of 67 degrees on Tuesday with a cool north breeze. The morning to watch is early Wednesday; this is when temperatures could very well get down into the 30s with some risk of frost. We will be much more specific as we get closer, but growers will need to keep an eye on this. Thursday and Friday of next week will feature a warming trend.
