GOOD SUMMER RAIN: This is a time of the year when we can deal with scorching heat and very dry conditions, so getting summer rain in mid-July is a great thing, although we will have to deal with a few strong thunderstorms from time to time.

On the maps this morning, our TUTT (Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough) is still just southeast of here, and will aid in the development of scattered to numerous showers and storms. In fact, we begin the day with some light rain falling over much of Blount and Etowah Counties as the sun comes up… this is what is left from a strong storm that has been moving slowly southwest during the night. The high today will be at or just over 90, but some places won’t get out of the 80s where storms form early enough.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: We will maintain a good chance of showers and thunderstorms both days. Won’t rain all day, and the sun should be out at times, but potential for beneficial rain is high thanks to the nearby TUTT and a deep layer of tropical moisture. We will struggle to reach 90 degrees thanks to the clouds and showers.

OUR WEEKEND: Showers and storms should thin out Saturday and Sunday as the air aloft becomes warmer. Expect a mix of sun and clouds both days with a high in the low 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like routine summer weather; partly sunny days, a few widely scattered showers and storms each afternoon, and highs in the low to mid 90s. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details and all of the graphics.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Showers and storms are likely today and tomorrow for Panama City and Destin, but the storms will be more scattered to the west at Pensacola and Gulf Shores. Then, over the weekend and into early next week, all of the Central Gulf Coast can expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with the usual risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs on the immediate coast remain in the upper 80s, and sea water temperatures are in the mid to upper 80s.

No sign of any tropical trouble… tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through the end of the week.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
