AT MID-AFTERNOON: Very typical summer weather conditions across Alabama today. Some places have been drenched with tropical downpours, other places are bone dry. Flash flooding was reported earlier this afternoon in Lamar County, and those heavier storms are now to the south over Choctaw, Marengo, and Sumter Counties. Additional showers, however, are forming in random places over North Alabama as well… the showers today are moving southeast very slowly.

The showers and storms will fade away later tonight after the sun goes down.

Temperatures are not bad at all for early August, which is usually our hottest part of the summer. Most places are somewhere between 88 and 92 at mid-afternoon.

REST OF THE WEEK: If you believe the 12Z guidance, tomorrow will feature rather typical summer weather; partly sunny with a chance of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms. But, then on Wednesday, both the GFS and the NAM look drier with only isolated showers around. After that, the coverage of showers and storms will increase a bit Thursday and Friday as an upper trough carves out over the eastern third of the nation. The high should be in the low 90s tomorrow through Thursday, but we might have a hard time getting out of the 80s Friday if we do indeed see an increase in the number of showers and storms around here. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details.

OUR WEEKEND: The GFS continues the idea of drier air moving into North Alabama over the weekend. If correct, this would mean very few showers around here, lower humidity levels, and slightly cooler nights. We will begin to nudge the forecast in that direction, but remember intrusions of dry, continental air are not that common here in August. The GFS is printing a high of only 87 degrees on Saturday, followed by 91 on Sunday. We might even make a run at the low 60s early Sunday, a little touch of fall in the air.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The weather looks pretty routine for August… the good news is that we see no sign of any triple digit heat problems here as the core of the heat bubble stays well to the west.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Florence fizzled out this morning and is only a remnant low. TS Ernesto is packing sustained winds of 65 mph, and is expected to become a minimal hurricane by the time it reaches the northern tip of Belize early Wednesday. Ernesto will stay far, far south of the Central Gulf Coast, and we see no tropical threats close to home for the next couple of weeks. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce tonight’s show at 8:30 p.m… you can watch live here.
