CHANGEABLE WEATHER THIS WEEKEND: We sure have had a nice stretch of near perfect weather lately. We are still going to enjoy some pleasant weather, but there will be changes especially this weekend and early next week. The long advertised next cool front was near Memphis this morning. It will push into extreme Northwest Alabama tonight and to Central Alabama by Saturday morning and pretty much stall by Sunday. It will come back again with noticeably cooler air by early next week, especially by Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday when the early morning low temperatures will be in the lower 50s and possibly even a few upper 40s. Highs during that time will be in the 70s. That is some of the nicest weather we have had in a long, long time.

YES, IT IS TIME FOR MORE FOOTBALL: We expect dry weather for the high school football games tonight. They will be played all over the state. It is a rich tradition in Alabama. For the most part it will be mostly clear and all of the stadiums and temperatures will be in the fairly comfortable mid and upper 70s during the game. Yes, we have some college games tomorrow: Louisiana-Monroe will travel to Auburn for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff Saturday. We look for game temperatures to be 80 at kickoff and warming to around 84 by the final whistle. More sun than clouds, so it will be a bit warm as the afternoon goes on. Alabama will be in Fayetteville, Arkansas to do battle with the Razorbacks with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. Probably cannot get by without some showers during the game, but temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s. UAB travels to Columbia for a game tomorrow evening with South Carolina. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m. and we believe the weather will be dry with about 82 at kickoff and 75 in the fourth quarter.

TROPICAL DISCUSSION: Tropical Storm Nadine is way out in the Atlantic. It is expected to intensify to hurricane strength by Sunday morning and then move toward the east and northeast in the far open Atlantic. No threat to any part of the USA. Meanwhile, a tropical wave is over 1,000 miles east of the Windward Islands in the Atlantic. The disturbance was moving west at 15 mph. No sign of it becoming a tropical storm or hurricane.

A NEW WORLD HEAT RECORD: We, and the weather community for our entire career, have accepted the fact that the hottest temperature ever in the whole wide world was 136 on July 10, 1913 at Lel Azizia, Libya. Recently a team of atmospheric scientists made a study of that and discovered that in reality the hottest ever in the world was 134 on July 10, 1913 at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley. So that is the new world record and has been all along.

USA NOTES: Most of the nation is free of real active weather today, but showers and thunderstorms were occurring over parts of Central and South Texas. Several Flash Flood Warnings were posted from the NWS in Austin and Shreveport and a Tornado Warning out of San Antonio. The hottest in the nation yesterday was 112 in Death Valley. The lowest this morning was a very cold 22 at Stanley, Idaho. Yes, that is a hard freeze. It was 23 in Gulkana, Alaska.
