COOLEST SINCE APRIL: How about these Alabama temperatures at daybreak…

Russellville 43
Black Creek (just northeast of Gadsden) 46
Haleyville 46
Fort Payne 46
Valley Head 46
Snead 48
Fayette 48
Gadsden 48
Courtland 48
Concord 49
Cullman 49

These temperatures will probably drop another degree or two… but this is clearly our coolest morning since April 24 when Birmingham dropped to 41 degrees.

I should also note these temperatures are well below the MOS (model output statistics) guidance; they have been running way too warm for many months now. Just a note for the young meteorologists that read this blog; MOS forecast temps can burn you badly in forecasting. And, another reason why we need to solve the “crap app” dilemma (many people only use bad smart phone apps that are based solely on MOS guidance with no human intervention).

THE DAYS AHEAD: Doesn’t get much better today, with blue sky, sunshine, and a high in the mid 70s along with very low humidity levels. I think tomorrow morning will be chilly as well, with lows between 45 and 52 in most places.

We warm into the low 80s tomorrow, followed by low to mid 80s Friday with a good supply of sunshine both days.

WEEKEND FORECAST: The upper trough sharpens up again this weekend, and another cold front will pass through Alabama Saturday night. I think it comes through in dry fashion, and it will bring down a fresh supply of cool, dry air for Sunday and early next week. Expect a good supply of sunshine both Saturday and Sunday; we reach the mid 80s Saturday, but highs drop back into the 70s Sunday and Monday. We note that fall begins this weekend; the autumnal equinox is Saturday morning at 9:49 a.m. CDT… the day with 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness as the sun is directly over the equator.

A very good chance we visit the 40s early Monday and Tuesday morning of next week as the cool early autumn weather continues.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No weather issues for Alabama or Auburn this weekend; the sky should be mostly clear for Alabama’s home game against Florida Atlantic (kickoff 4:00 p.m. CDT) with a kickoff temperature near 82 degrees, falling into the 70s during the second half. Auburn will host LSU at 6:00 p.m…. the sky will be fair with temperatures falling through the 70s.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Doesn’t get much better. For the coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores we expect sunny days and fair nights through the weekend, with highs generally in the low to mid 80s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I will be speaking to a home school group this morning at the Church at Brook Hills… then I will be swinging by Oak Mountain Intermediate School before headed in to work; the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 3:30 or so this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
